Lighting

There was much discussion of the different techniques Nick could use to achieve the desired effectt. EL wire was pooh-poohed and the favoured approach was to sand some clear perspex (to diffuse the light) and then light the panel with white LEDs.

In the end, simplicity ruled: three white cold cathodes backed with strips of wood to bounce the light forward through the panel.

From the open side, this approach clearly produces a lot of light but from the back side you can see that by using such localised light sources, Nick has three distinct stripes. However, all is not lost...

Once you add in the bamboo artwork, you discover something quite clever. Whether by explicit design or just sheer good luck, the light is place under the large white patches Stephanie's painting and the dark areas of the backlight line up with the thick bamboo shoots, creating a neat shadow effect.
